Bolsonaro arrested after being considered a flight risk
Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in September and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.
This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.
His child, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will have a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for medical care, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
He was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.
High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was took office without problem on the first day of 2023.
But a following week, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.
The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The former president called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
