EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
