Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue
Each time a prominent prize-giving event nears, you'll find a clamor for introducing additional classifications to honor unsung work and satisfy the passions of fans who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would board games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
